The REFARM.THE.CITY GARDEN BOARD ’12 w/Hernani Dias is one of the many ReFarm projects that its founder Hernani Dias led. Dias invited Kazemzadeh to visit Gijon at the LABoral Centro de Arte and Creation Industrial on the Universidad Laboral de Gijon campus to assist with the boards design and development. The board was also named ReFarm.the.City Kids Board, and was used in teaching elementary school children about the many facets, requirements and restraints of growing different types of foods in an urban environment. Using the kids board, children could test and monitor the available light, for instance, over a period of time in a particular location in the garden to see if it were a viable location to grow tomatoes, cucumbers or kale. Considering the shade that buildings cast in a city makes this data essential to needs and issues of urban farming. Soil, moisture, air quality and other environmental factors are also elements considered with the kids boards.
The boards were tested within elementary school classes in and around Cambrils and Barcelona.
This week was also following our work together on the OSE: Open Source Eating project development at the Medialab Prado in Madrid with Tian Le.
